1. Google I/O shared year Baseline achievements
At Google I/O, the Web Platform Dashboard was announced, which allows tracking of Baseline achievements for the current and previous years. While it isn’t a direct replacement for CanIUse or MDN, it serves as a useful ‘historical’ tracker, enabling developers and speakers to see exactly when features were released and to monitor new features.
This year saw significant advancements, with the following major features landing:
- CSS Nesting
Allows writing nested CSS like in SASS. - Popover API
Enables the creation of popover elements that can be used for tooltips, menus, and other transient overlays. - Screen Wake Lock API
Prevents the device’s screen from dimming or locking. - Declarative Shadow DOM
Allows the creation of Shadow DOM content using HTML rather than JavaScript. - @container query
Enables querying based on container size instead of the screen, similar to @media. - :has selector
Allows styling elements based on their content. - ‘inert’ attribute
Makes an element and all its children inactive to any actions, including hover and click. - :user-valid and :user-invalid pseudo-classes
